The way the feed is setup, they have to manually subscribe within the iCal program, and all of the events will automatically be transfered as calendar items into a new calendar.

Step 1) Open your iCal program, and under the “subscription” section, right-click (or control-click) the area just below any existing subscriptions, then click the “Subscribe…” option.

Step 2) In the Calendar URL, enter http://missionlocal.org/?ical=events as the calendar you wish to subscribe to.

Step 3) A settings window will come up. Make sure to set the auto-refresh setting to Every Day. Setting this to more often can reduce performance, as the calendar database is very large and is process intensive.

In the WordPress admin, view all posts in the "Special Projects" category too see all possible special features. Special features on the front are made by creating a seperate post from the original story Post or Page. These new posts serve as a proxy for the original. The order they appear in the feature bar is determined by the date of the proxy post, witht the 9 most recent showing.

The featured spot is made by adding a new post, giving it a title and art and then telling the post to redirect to the project’s real location.Start by giving your new post a title, but also include "Special Projects – Redirect," so that in the admin it’s clear that this isn’t the actual story, only the proxy story. No body copy is needed.

Add categories

The front page special features row pulls the proxy posts by looking for the last 9 in the "Redirects" and the "Special Projects" categories. You much categorize your stories in those two categories only. Other categories would put the proxy post in standard news categories, which is probably *not* what you want to do.

In the custom fields, add a "redirect" with the value being the URL of the story or page you want your special feature icon to go.

Set author

Set the author to the staff account for your site, otherwise both the original post and the redirected proxy post will appear on your staff page.

The image shown on the front is simply a lead image, just like any other lead image onour site. The image you upload should be 200px wide by 118px tall. If it isn’t exactly that sized, the site will crop it to that size, so you’re image might look different on the site than it did when you uploaded it. Don’t "Insert into post," align or set a size. Simply "Save all changes."

Because this proxy post is treated like any other post in WordPress, we want to set the date back so that it doesn’t show up unwanted places, like the related stories bar at the bottom of posts. I usually set the post back 30 days or so. Remember, this date sets the order on the front page too, so you may want to set the date so the post appears in a certain spot in the list.

By default, WordPress assumes a Post will only have one byline. Occassionally, we need the ability to have more than one byline. CalPress has a rudimentary method to have multiple bylines on a story.

WordPress by default assumes one byline. CalPress uses the "Display name publicly as" setting in the user’s profile as the byline. CalPress turns the byline into a link to the author’s bio page.

Setting the default byline

The default byline comes from the "Author" field at the bottom of a Post. This can be changed to any other author in the system.

The end result

Here is an article with mutliple bylines. Unlike a default byline, there are no links to individual author profiles. In fact, internally WordPress has kept the association with the original author. So the article can only be listed under one person’s proflle page.

Add the multiple bylines

To add multiple bylines, select (or add if they don’t exist) a "byline" in the "Name" field. Put the name you want to use in the "Value" field. Use one "byline" custom field for each name you want. CalPress will automatically but in the appropriate seperator between the names.

The downside!

There are a couple of downsides to using the multiple bylines option. The primary is that the Post is still associated with the author listed in the drop down "Author" option in the Post. In the exampel above, Katherine would have the story associated her profile. Josh, on the other hand, would not.

The placement of stories on our news sites doesn’t always work well in simple reverse chronological order. A big story from this morning might still need to be on the top of the page, even if we have other content that is newer. Also, not all content that goes into our WordPress site needs to go on the front page. CalPress attempts to address these two issues in a couple ways: 1) by giving you the ability to select a single category to appear on the front and 2) allow only specifically categorizied articles that are also tagged to be appear in the featured area of the layout.

CalPress’ default “news” layout

CalPress’ "news" layout shows stories in this order. By default, all published "Posts" will flow through the front of the site in this order, regardless of category. For most news websites, this isn’t ideal.

Setting up CalPress to use a specific category on the front

If not already done so, you can have CalPress only put Posts from specific categories on the front page. As as a site administrator, go to the Basic Configuration in the CalPress Options in the WordPress admin.

Select front category

In the Basic Configuration screen, select the category you wish to use from the dropdown. I often make a category called "Front." This allows me to categorize news stories under Sports, Politics, etc, but also decide which ones need to go to the front of the site.

Front page category selected

Now all front page stories are from a specific category

Lead story area

Sometimes even specifing a single category doesn’t give us enough control. If we have a front page category selected, we can also specifiy a "lead story" category. Lead story category stories stay in the featured content area above.

Specifying “Lead Story” category

Go back to the Basic Configuration settings in CalPress. From there, select the category you want to use in the "Lead Story" area. I tend to use a category called "Featured." Then, any Post I put in the "Front" and "Featured" category ends up on lead story spot.

Categorizing in the Post

In the Post, select your chosen front and lead story category. Those stories should apear in the desired area on the front page.
